A Woman's Work

The other night I was tugging and tucking and trying to change the sheets on the top bunk. It was something I had put off for days...(sorry Ben that you had to sleep on the floor.) It is seriously so hard. The babysitter had offered to do it for me the night before and for $15.00/hour I was happy to take her up on it. But she gave up after 10 minutes of coaching from the boys and trying to keep Em from climbing up the ladder. Anyway, in all my grunting and groaning Nate sensed my need for some sympathy and support. He looked up at me from his "picking up legos" place on the floor and said,

"It seems like it's easier to be a dad.
Dads just go to work during the day
and then come home at night.
But moms have to work DAY and NIGHT."

I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. He was only trying to make me feel better. I took a breath and we talked about how dads (especially our dad) and moms both work really hard to have a happy family.

And then I climbed down to fold some laundry and do the dishes :-)

He is something else. That's so funny. You're making me reconsider getting bunk beds one day :)

That's a great story. He is one perceptive child, even if he didn't have the story entirely straight.

For $15 an hour the sitter should be teaching your kids Mandarin while changing the sheets!

Yes, Tyler has had to sleep on the floor a few times because I seriously dislike making the top bunk. I wish I could have come and helped you. It is certainly easier with two people. Tell Nate Happy Birthday from Tyler. And we loved your Christmas card!

do you require a masters degree for a babysitter? yikes! i thought i was bad off paying $7/hour.

i think that nate will make a good husband. at least if he learns to have empathy and help his wife when he sees that her job is neverending. some days just really feel like that, don't they?
